A well owner starts every filtration decision from behind. City customers get an annual Consumer Confidence Report that names what is in their supply and at what concentration. Private well owners get nothing. There is no report, no regulator, no baseline, so most people buy on symptoms: the tub is orange, the water smells, the kettle is crusted. Symptoms are a bad brief, because two very different problems can look identical at the tap and the wrong unit is a four figure mistake.

The thesis of this piece is simple. You cannot choose a well water system until you know what is in the water, and once you do know, the answer stops being a matter of taste. A test result maps to a specific treatment technology, and that technology maps to a specific product. Everything below is organized that way: number first, hardware second.

Start with the test

Both federal agencies that publish private well guidance say the same thing, and neither of them mentions hardware. The EPA recommends testing a private well annually for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids and pH, and testing more often if there are small children, elderly adults, or someone pregnant or nursing in the house. The CDC recommends annual testing for the same parameters, and both agencies say to use a state-certified laboratory. EPA also names the moments to test immediately: after flooding, after new construction or land disturbance near the well, after you repair or replace any part of the well system, and any time the taste, smell or appearance changes.

Here is the honest scope of it. The panel covers hardness, pH, iron, manganese, tannin, TDS, color and iron bacteria. That is a sizing test, and it is a good one, because those are precisely the eight numbers that determine which tank you need. It is not a health screening panel. Of the four parameters EPA names for annual testing, it covers two, pH and TDS. It does not test total coliform or nitrate, and it does not cover arsenic, VOCs or radon. Iron bacteria is a nuisance organism that stains and slimes fixtures, and it is not the same test as total coliform.

So the correct sequence is both, not either. Run the county health department or state-certified lab panel for coliform and nitrate, which in most counties runs well under $100, and run the Kind Water survey to size the equipment. A vendor test that gets credited back against the purchase is a fair deal on the sizing half. It should not be the only test you ever run.

The six problems, and what each one costs to solve

Iron and manganese staining

The number that matters is 0.3 mg/L. Below that, iron is generally invisible. Above it, you get the orange ring in the toilet tank and the rust colored laundry, and manganese above roughly 0.05 mg/L adds black specks and grey streaks. Where it gives ground: 7 mg/L is a real ceiling, and wells above it need a different approach such as chemical oxidation. The pH window matters too, because iron oxidizes poorly in acidic water. That creates a sequencing question worth settling before you order rather than after, because the WS-PHN neutralizer publishes max iron 0 mg/L, max manganese 0 mg/L and max hydrogen sulfide 0 mg/L, so it is not rated to take raw iron-bearing water either. A well that is both acidic and iron-bearing is a case to size with Kind Water directly, not one to sequence off a spec sheet. Sulfur smell

Hydrogen sulfide is the rotten egg smell, and the diagnostic trick is free: if it is only on the hot side, the problem is usually the water heater anode rod, not the well, and no whole-house filter will fix it. Get the sulfide number before you buy, not after.

Hardness

Hardness is measured in grains per gallon, and the practical thresholds are familiar: under 7 gpg is mild, 7 to 10 is where scale starts showing on fixtures, and above 10 gpg you are replacing water heaters early. Only salt-based ion exchange removes hardness. The S-650 at $2,235.28\* does that, rated up to 12 GPM.

This is the section where the marketing gets slippery across the whole industry, so be precise. Kind Water's salt-free SF-600 at $1,705.87\* uses template assisted crystallization, which converts scale forming minerals into crystals that are less prone to sticking to pipes and elements. Kind Water states it converts 88 percent or more of those minerals, and we could not find a published test method behind that figure, so treat it as brand-stated. What is not in dispute is on Kind Water's own spec sheet: the SF-600 "retains beneficial minerals and preserves your water's natural hardness." Your hardness number does not go down. Soap still will not lather. If what you want is soft water, salt-free is the wrong category, and no one should sell it to you as one.

Where it gives ground, and this is the single most useful spec on the site: the S-650 and the SF-600 both publish max iron 0 mg/L and max hydrogen sulfide 0 mg/L, and so do the WS-PHN and the WS-TAN. Any iron at all and a bare ion exchange bed fouls its resin. That is what the WS-5500 at $3,397.97\* is for, rated to 7 mg/L iron, 1 mg/L manganese and 1 mg/L sulfide at up to 12 GPM, with salt refills every four to six weeks. On a well, the combined unit is usually the honest starting point rather than the upsell.

Coliform bacteria

This one has no symptom. Water with total coliform present looks, smells and tastes normal, which is the entire reason EPA and CDC put an annual lab test at the top of their guidance. It will also not appear on the Kind Water survey panel, so you have to order it separately.

A positive result is an indicator, not a diagnosis, and the first response is not a product. Confirm with a resample, then look at the well cap, the casing seal, the grout and the septic setback, and follow your health department's direction on shock chlorination. Continuous UV treatment is the layer brands add after the well itself has been addressed. It is always installed downstream of the filtration stages, which is correct practice, because iron and suspended solids shade the lamp and reduce the dose reaching the water.

Kind Water confirmed to us on 12 August 2026, and again on 25 August 2026, that the unit carries NSF/ANSI 55 Class B certification. Kind Water states the standard as NSF/ANSI 55, Disinfection Performance and Microbial Safety. That is worth knowing precisely, because the class is what tells you the intended use. NSF defines Class B as supplemental bactericidal treatment at a 16 mJ/cm2 dose, for drinking water that has already been tested and deemed acceptable, targeting normally occurring non-pathogenic organisms. Class A is the class defined for water of unknown or contaminated quality, at 40 mJ/cm2, and it additionally requires a UV sensor and a failure alarm. Kind Water publishes no dose in mJ/cm2. What it does publish is a max flow rate of up to 15 GPM at 95 percent UVT, a 50 watt lamp, and smart alerts for lamp and sleeve replacement every 12 months. The brand also states the unit sterilizes 99.9 percent of bacteria and viruses. We are reporting that last figure as a brand claim. The class is now confirmed, which is the half of this that decides intended use, and it is the half that matters most to a buyer. The dose in mJ/cm2 and the NSF listing number are still not published, and those are what make a Standard 55 listing checkable against a specific installation. If microbiology is your reason for buying, ask for the dose and the listing number in writing before you order.

Acidic water

Low pH is the problem people find last and pay for first, usually as a plumber's invoice. The tells are blue-green staining in sinks and tubs and pinhole leaks in copper supply lines, and the cause is water aggressive enough to dissolve the pipe. The WS-PHN at $1,882.34\* treats water in the 5.8 to 7.0 range and brings it to roughly 6.9 to 7.2 by dissolving crushed white marble limestone, a high purity calcium carbonate media, at up to 12 GPM. Where it gives ground: calcite works by dissolving into the water, which means the media is consumable and Kind Water states refills run every 3 to 6 months depending on pH and usage, at $129.99\* a refill. It also means the process adds hardness by design, so a well that is both acidic and hard needs a softener downstream of the neutralizer. Read the rest of the spec block before you plan the plumbing, though, because the WS-PHN publishes max iron 0 mg/L, max manganese 0 mg/L and max hydrogen sulfide 0 mg/L, the same ceiling as the plain softeners. If your test shows any iron or sulfide alongside low pH, do not assume the neutralizer simply goes first. Ask Kind Water to specify the order and any pretreatment for that combination in writing. And 5.8 is the floor. Below it you are into soda ash injection, which is a different system entirely.

Tannins

Tannins are dissolved organics leached from decaying vegetation, common in shallow wells and in areas with peat or heavy leaf litter. The water runs yellow to tea colored and tastes earthy, and the diagnostic separator from iron is the glass test: iron colored water clears when it settles or filters, tannin colored water stays tinted. The WS-TAN at $2,941.16\* pairs an anion exchange tannin resin with a cation softening resin, rated to 3 ppm of tannins and 50 gpg of hardness (855 ppm) at up to 10 GPM.

Where it gives ground: it is a salt-based unit, so it needs a brine tank and salt like any softener, and its flow rating is 10 GPM against 12 GPM for most of the line, which is worth checking against a large house. It also publishes max iron 0 mg/L, max manganese 0 mg/L and max hydrogen sulfide 0 mg/L, and that ceiling matters more here than anywhere, because tannin wells frequently carry iron as well. If your test shows colour and iron together, the WS-TAN on its own is not the answer. Kind Water states the cation resin is certified to NSF/ANSI 44 and 61. Read that carefully: that is a certification of the resin as a component, not a Standard 44 performance listing for the assembled system, and we found no Standard 44 system listing for any Kind Water unit.

Where a whole-house filter is not enough

It is worth naming what a well system does not do, because the category is oversold in both directions.

Compare the 3M Aqua-Pure AP904 at $489.95 through Filters Fast, with cartridges running about $312 a year. On paper it beats every Kind Water unit on flow, rated 5 micron nominal at 20 gpm with a 100,000 gallon cartridge, and it carries an NSF/ANSI 42 certification for chlorine taste and odor reduction and particulate reduction. Apply the same standard to 3M that we applied above, though: that listing sits on the AP917HD-S cartridge, so it is a component certification, not a whole-system performance listing. It is a particulate and carbon cartridge with scale inhibition media, and that is the whole story. It does not remove hardness, it has no oxidation stage for iron or sulfide, it does not touch pH or tannins, and it is not a microbiological treatment. On a municipal line it is an excellent, cheap, well certified filter. On an untreated well it solves roughly one of the six problems above. The price gap between $489.95 and $2,823.52* is not margin, it is a different job.

The same logic runs downward. A whole-house system is sized for flow across every fixture in the house, which is the wrong economics for the two gallons a day you actually drink. Keep a point-of-use layer under the kitchen sink.   • A confirmed coliform positive: this is a wellhead problem before it is a filtration problem. Resample to confirm, then work through the well cap, casing seal, grout and septic setback with your health department, and follow their direction on shock chlorination and retesting. Use bottled or boiled water in the meantime. Bottom line

Kind Water's well line earns its place by publishing the numbers most competitors hide: 7 mg/L iron, 1 mg/L manganese, 1 mg/L sulfide, a 5.8 to 7.0 pH window, 3 ppm tannins, and the 0 mg/L iron ceiling printed on the S-650, SF-600, WS-PHN and WS-TAN that tells you honestly when you need to spend more. That specificity is what makes a test result actionable, and it is the strongest thing about the range. For the household with iron and hardness together, the WS-5500 at $3,397.97* is the sensible buy, and for staining and smell without hardness the WS-AIO at $2,823.52* is the cleaner one.

Where we would hold back is microbiology, though for a narrower reason than before. Kind Water has now confirmed the UV unit is NSF/ANSI 55 Class B, which answers the question we had. Class B is a real certification for a real job, polishing water that is already known to be safe, and on a private well that job comes up often. It is not the certification for water that has just failed a coliform test. If bacteria is your reason for buying, that is a Class A conversation and a wellhead conversation before it is a product one. And if you are on a municipal line, the much cheaper 3M AP904 at $489.95 does the job that unit is actually for. The decision was never which brand. It was which number came back from the lab.
